Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
